Description : ZBrush 2021.5 was released, information about which was presented on November 11, the software received new tools designed to edit surface details, including a new “neat” Thick Skin system to change only the surface layer of the sculpt. The update also received ZModeller – a set of tools for modeling hard surfaces.

Among the new features is the thick skin system, which limits the sculptural details to the surface layer of the model. Thanks to this function, you can imitate traditional modeling by imitating the behavior of real clay. The feature works with any standard ZBrush brush, alpha channel and stroke type, and the thickness of the sculpt layer is adjustable, which determines how far the strokes penetrate or create a surface.

A contrast system has also been added, thanks to which you can control the details of the surface. According to the developers, this feature is especially useful when 3D printing models and allows you to emphasize the details of the surface so that the print is clearer, without the risk of changing the main sculpture.

Rendering changes include a new Preview AO option in Preview Render, ZBrush’s real-time rendering mode. When this function is activated, occlusion is applied to the preview, darkening the recessed areas of the sculpt, thereby emphasizing surface details and making it easier to accurately assess their effect. The BPR system also received a new Radial Overlay filter, which simulates the effect of a beam of light that illuminates the model.

ZModeller has also received an update, including a new Slice Mesh option that slices edges directly into a polygonal mesh. In addition to controlling mesh topology, it can be used to create surface shapes by cutting a closed area on a mesh surface, converting it to a PolyGroup, and then extruding or deepening all groups.
