Description: Sumie (Sumi-Γ©) Kaneko creates music spanning millennia as the master of the traditional repertoire of the ancient koto instrument. She also pioneered the use of koto in jazz and experimental music in solo and group performances around the world. She has collaborated with artists such as Pulitzer Prize-winning Paula Vogel, Evan Ziporin from Gamelan Galaka Tiki, Nick Burch from RONIN, Taiko artist Kenny Endo, Kaoru Watanabe and master guide-shamisen Yumiko Tanaka.
Koto is the national instrument of Japan. It has 13 strings that are usually stretched over 13 movable bridges across the width of the instrument. The strings can be fingered with three fingers, and the bridges can be moved to change the pitch. The result is whimsical and grounded sounds; airy and earthy, adding uniqueness to any product.
