Description: In this episode release, Django Diabate joined the Session Team at Laboutique Studios Dakar to play amazing Ngonis. This sophisticated instrument has appeared in several previous sessions, so we are pleased to emphasize its unique sounds and value.
Ngoni is a string instrument created in West Africa. It has several options designed for different purposes. Some are used for celebrations and special occasions, others are reserved for ceremonial purposes.
It is known that the Ngoni existed since at least 1352, when Ibn Battuta, a Moroccan traveler, said that he had seen him in the courtyard of Mansa Musa. It is believed that he turned into a banjo in North America after the export of slaves to Mande.
The basis of the ngoni is actually a drum, which allows the instrument to fill almost any space with sound, and the player can act as one person, at the same time creating a rhythm and a melody.
