When mixing, something as simple as positioning a sound left or right may seem like a simple thing, but it makes all the difference between a good mix and a great one. Multi-Platinum mixer Kenny Gioia breaks down the art of panning, so you get a solid foundation and advanced knowledge of this basic, but incredibly important mixing technique. Kenny starts with an introduction, where he goes through the basics of Panning and how it’s used in modern production. Then, Kenny makes the complicated concept of using Pan Laws simple, and how to set them correctly in your DAW. Frequency and Sound Localization is then discussed, as well as Panning FX such as Auto-Pan, Rotating Speakers and using Automation in your DAW to design cool moving effects.
Creating Stereo & Doubles are up next, and Kenny explains how to go Stereo from Mono sources, and how to use Delays and Shift Tracks to imitate Doubling, while being aware of Comb Filtering and Phase issues. Making Wide Stereo FX with Reverb, Delay, Chorus, Flange and Ping Pong Delays is then shown, giving new life to your old effects!
Now that you have the basics down, Kenny goes over how to Pan each track in a mix, including Drums, Percussion, Bass, Keyboards, Piano, Guitars and Vocals. He even includes the finished mix of the song so you can hear how the individual panned tracks sound in the mix. Lastly, LCR Mixing and Panning has become very popular lately and Kenny demonstrates why and how to adjust your mix to match these industry standard rules.
If you’re a mixer, engineer, producer or just someone getting into recording, this series is an absolute must have. You can’t build your sonic temple on a weak foundation. Make yours strong… Watch “Panning Explained” today!
