Something I’d found interesting about Brazilian music is that the preservation of the rhythms brought in the transatlantic slave trade was due in part to the culture of the traders; the Portuguese are said to have been the least oppressive, encouraging the slaves brought to Brazil to preserve and perform their music. Brazilian styles are founded on the African as well as indigenous rhythms of South America, but oddly not as blatantly African as those of the Caribbean slave groups which were under the control of British, Dutch, French, Irish and other European traders.
