Description: Sumie (Sumi-é) Kaneko creates music spanning millennia as a master of the traditional repertoire of the ancient koto instrument. She also pioneered the use of koto in jazz and experimental music in solo and group performances around the world. She has collaborated with artists such as Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, Evan Ziporin of Gamelan Galaka Tiki, Nick Burch of RONIN, taiko artist Kenny Endo, Kaoru Watanabe, and gidayu shamisen virtuoso Yumiko Tanaka.
Koto is the national instrument of Japan. It has 13 strings, which are usually stretched across 13 movable bridges across the width of the instrument. The strings are plucked with three fingers, and the bridges can be moved to change the pitch. The result is sounds that are quirky and grounded; airy and earthy, adding uniqueness to any product.
