Jane’s Addiction is an American rock band, considered one of the pioneers of the alternative rock style, formed in 1985 in Los Angeles. The original lineup of the band included: Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums). After breaking up in 1991, the group briefly reunited in 1997 and in 2001; both times Avery refused to participate. In 2008, the band got together in the “golden” lineup, together with Avery, and held a world tour. In early 2010, Avery left the group and they began working on new material without him.
Jane’s Addiction was one of the first bands to emerge in the early 1990s, riding the wave of contagious interest in the alternative rock movement, to gain media attention and achieve success in the United States. Their first farewell tour (in 1991) launched the first Lollapalooza festival, a showcase for alternative rock. As a result, Jane’s Addiction became something of an icon, which Farrell dubbed “Alternative Nation” (he coined the term at Lollapalooza, which was his brainchild). The band was ranked number thirty-fifth on VH1’s list of “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock”.
