Description: Arco is a beautiful ensemble of four pianos, carefully sampled in a concert hall, with many bow and plucked articulations. Arco is ideal for creating dramatic sounds, shimmering textures and lush melodic lines. Arco’s unique sonic fragrances, created over the course of a year and being the first of their kind, will be a welcome addition to any composer’s toolkit.
The sound of Arco can be described as a hybrid of a piano and a string ensemble. We took four pianos (two grand pianos and two pianos), put them in a concert hall, and played each note using a number of techniques. After weeks of planning and experimentation, we settled on nylon line coated with two types of rosin – bass rosin for the lower range and cello rosin for the upper range.
In addition to bowed articulations, the library also contains click sounds, a specially scripted plucked tremolo, as well as a number of atonal and aleatoric effects and glissandi.
Designed with the needs of today’s film, TV and game composers in mind, Arco is extremely playable right out of the box with a clean and accessible user interface.
We spent 3 days in a modern recording studio in a concert hall recording the ensemble with 20 high quality microphones (including Neumann, DPA, Royer, Coles and Schoeps) through a flawless signal path (D.A.V. preamps, RME converters). The room we have chosen has a delightfully rich, dense yet rather short reverb tail, perfect for creating a sense of distance, yet dry enough to add your own reverb to taste. Three included mic mixes make it easy to select the perfect sound for your music, and the unique perspective control gives you one slider to easily switch between near and far mix.
