Canva, which now owns Affinity, introduced a single free app for working with vector graphics, photography, and layouts called Affinity.
The Affinity suite was a set of three apps: Affinity Designer (for working with vector graphics), Affinity Photo (for working with raster graphics), and Affinity Publisher (for layouts). Now Affinity offers all the same features, but combined into a single app. Previously, developers attempted to combine three apps into a single workflow, although each app had to be purchased and installed separately. Now, everything has become simpler—it’s a single, free app.
PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, IDML, and many other formats are supported. Like previous versions of Affinity Photo, the new app supports non-destructive editing of raster images without losing the original.

What’s new in Affinity by Canva?
Previously, Affinity included three separate apps: Designer, Photo, and Publisher—each sold with a single license. Now they’re combined into a single tool that lets you create illustrations, edit photos, and create layouts without switching between programs or losing data. The app has been completely redesigned:
One interface and a single project file. Everything in one place, from layout to retouching.
Real-time response. Panoramas, zooming, working with thousands of layers.
New customization options. You can create your own “studio”: select the desired panels, tools, colors, and save multiple working configurations. These presets can be shared with colleagues or the community.
Canva Integration
This is the first major release of Affinity since Canva acquired developer Serif in 2024. Now the ecosystems are directly connected: projects from Affinity can be exported to Canva with one click. Additionally, Canva AI Studio, a set of AI tools for Canva Premium users, has been added within the app. Available features include:
Generative Fill – adding background and object details;
Expand & Edit – expanding and editing images without losing quality;
Remove Background – quickly removing backgrounds.
The developers emphasize that all work created in Affinity remains under the user’s control and is not used to train AI models.
The decision to make Affinity free is a strategic move by Canva toward the professional market. Previously, designers often complained about the “monopoly” of subscription solutions like Adobe Creative Cloud. Now professionals and studios have a free alternative with the same level of tools.
The Affinity brand has been around for over 10 years and has earned a reputation as a high-quality and fast alternative to Adobe. After acquiring Canva, the developers promised to preserve the product’s spirit—and judging by the release, they’ve delivered.
Canva is transforming Affinity into a free tool for professional designers. Now, photos, vectors, and layout are all in one window, working faster and allowing you to create without limitations. This is the biggest change in Affinity’s history and, potentially, a new standard for the entire design industry.

Affinity by Canva features:
Three tabs: Vector for vector graphics tools, Pixel for raster graphics, Layout for layout, and Canva AI, which contains paid AI features. You can work on the same document in any of the tabs, each with access to the appropriate tools.
The available functions and their layout are largely similar to those in Photoshop and other Adobe programs, so getting the hang of it is relatively straightforward.
However, there are some unique features. For example, “Filters” in Affinity are implemented as adjustment layers applied to underlying layers.
Adobe raster and vector formats, as well as RAW files from various cameras, are fully supported for import, and a wide range of formats with flexible settings are also supported for export.
