Why do I need first and second violins?
This is a very good and correct question that many of you are rightly asking!
The perfect balance and highly demanded sound of the orchestra has been refined over the centuries. To capture this sonic beauty with samples, each section must be carefully captured … multiple players, each with different instruments, slightly different timbres, subtle differences in tuning, vibrato, and in different positions in the stereo / sound field.
The combination of USING first and second violins in your palette allows you to access this beautiful, lush synergy of instruments … which is not possible due to the overlapping of several tracks of the first violins, which at least can cause problems with phase, but more importantly, hold your music from its full potential and depth.
For United Strings of Europe, second violins are especially important, since – in accordance with how the USE is played (and similarly to how a lot of scores are recorded) – the second violins are actually located to the right of the conductor, and the first Violin is opposite to the left. Usually, many parts are recorded this way, and they have the advantage of having the bass sit in the middle at the back (you want the bass on your track to be in the middle!)
On top of all this – from a purely musical / performing point of view – each note on the second violins is a new and new performance for the first violins … Each note has a slightly different intent, emotion and musicality. Combining and orchestrating with both sections will multiply the depth of your music.
