Description: Saying that Yang Chang is a drummer is like saying that a unicorn is a horse. Of course, this is true, but there is more to come. A more apt assessment is that Chang is an evolved percussionist: half human, half machine. It uses a sophisticated set of drum triggers to play and manipulate samples live, combining real-world drums with abstract sources so that they interact and infect each other. The combination of computer controlled sounds and Chang’s natural rhythm is striking. This gives his music biomechanical qualities that are difficult to define. It’s like free jazz, marching band cadences, breakcore and a drummer – all of which create a beautiful, rhythmically controlled child.
We met Ian at a metal store and recorded how he plays not-so-rudimentary rudiments and polyrhythms on everything he could find. He hit scrap metal, pipes and cars, which sounded strange. We recorded his performance on the Zoom HR4 with a Sennheiser K6 with an ME66 shotgun mic and ME64 cardioid modules where possible. We processed the sounds, cut them into loops and single shots, then turned the most melodic lines into the Kontakt scripting tool (which we included in the package) and made even more loops and presets out of it.
Metal Structures is a gold mine for beatmakers. Its sounds are equally convenient in cinematic music as well as in trap, lo-fi or IDM.
